The heart of Salzburg is its baroque old town, which seems to overflow with sights. Salzburg owes the appearance of its historic center, the lively building activity, the prince archbishops Wolf Dietrich, Markus Sittikus and Paris Lodron, in the 17. and 18th century. The three large squares, Residenzplatz, Domplatz and Kapitelplatz, also earned Salzburg the name “Venice of the North”. In 1997 the Old Town was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
